About BNH LivestockWelcome to BNH Livestock, a family run operation near Innisfail, AB. Brad and Nicole both grew up on family farms and have since grown a family of their own, with four boys every day is an adventure and that is how everyone likes it. Nicole grew up near Falun, AB with her parents Kelly and Colleen Brittain and showed purebred cattle in both 4H as well as at various provincial shows. Brittain Farms is still a large influence in BNH Livestock and they still sell bulls in conjunction with them at the annual Gelbvieh Advantage Bull Sale, the second Friday in March. Brad grew up near Red Deer, AB and grew up showing and selling purebred Angus seedstock with his family.
BNH Livestock was established in 2010 and has since grown to what it is today. BNH is comprised of approximately 40 to 45 purebred Gelbvieh cows, and constantly looking to improve on those genetics, focusing on quality, not quantity. The focus is to make the farm life work for us and to work with our lifestyle. We also run a small herd of top quality purebred Nubian & LaMancha dairy goats that we source only the best genetics from across all of Canada. Our goats are health tested annually for CAE and Johnes and we aim continually to offer a top quality, productive, well socialized goat to our customers. Our goats are bred for milk production, udder quality, conformation and soundness. Our kids are all hand raised to ensure a healthy, consistent, well adjusted set of kids to be offered for sale or retained as replacement breeding stock. With a herd of goats we seemed to have a hole in our operation and so we searched high and low to find a breed of pigs that would compliment our program. A breed that was docile and easy to handle, minimal to zero rooting so it could graze our pastures without causing a disturbance and yet were of adequate size to warrant raising as pasture pork. The Kunekune breed ticked all the boxes for us and we added our first Kunekune pair in 2019 and haven't looked back. Our feeder pigs consume the excess goats milk that is produced and graze along side our goats all summer. They house with them all winter and clean up the second cut hay under our goat feeders to maximize forage use. Kunekune meat is a dark meat with remarkable marbling and are considered the "lard pig" for their stark white lard that we render down and use for cooking and baking. The Gelbvieh cattle, Nubian & LaMancha goats, Kunekune pigs, along with a small flock of laying hens, embden geese and a couple quarter horses make BNH Livestock what it is today. Each species has its place in our farm and compliments one another to allow us to be very self sustaining, which we are proud of. Our boys are highly involved in the day to day activities of the farm and so we base a lot of our focus on making sure that our animals are well adjusted and easy to work with. We run our cow herd on approximately 90 acres of intense pasture grazing. Our cattle are not fed for show ring use, we believe in slow growth to allow for proper growth and development, leading to longevity and soundness. Due to our smaller sized operation, we have a strict cull program and focus largely on quality, disposition and productivity. We have worked hard to get where we are today and we are excited about what the future of BNH Livestock has in store. We are passionate about our livestock and farming and always happy to share more about our program and answer any questions. Please feel free to contact us if you would like to stop in for a tour or would like more information. Sincerely, BNH Livestock |
